Travel Day to The Galapagos Islands
Departed from Quito early the next morning, flying west 627 miles into the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Heading west away from the mainland of Ecuador, you feel like you are heading towards the end of the earth. You can see how “Flat Earthers” could look across the horizon and feel like you could fall off into oblivion. It really makes you admire the Voyage of the Beagle, where Darwin joining the expedition as the Naturalist, found their way to the tiny dots in the ocean that are the Galapagos Islands.
As soon as we landed we were whisked away to our ship. After a brief introduction to the Captain and crew we were taken on our first excursion, Black Turtle Cove.
Black Turtle Gove - Baltra Island
Black Turtle Cove on Baltra Island is beautiful, with striking vibrant colors that feel almost unnatural. The blue feet of the Boobies is eye catching, and then the birds soar over your heads, just to plunge into the ocean at breakneck speeds to retrieve a meal. You glide in the boats, with your fingers just a few inches from the sea, watching for sea turtles beside, and perhaps beneath the boat, or anything else you can catch with a glimpse. It’s a marvelous introduction to what the next several days holds for us.
