Mallorca Bike Camp: Days 4-7

Day 5: Son Moll

After conquering the challenging Cap de Formentor, Jeff and I decided to take it easy with a leisurely ride to the charming town of Son Moll. This out-and-back journey offered a refreshing break, filled with stunning beach views. We enjoyed cold Coca-Colas and I had to get my European fix of a frothy cappuccino at a beach side café, soaking in the sun and ambiance before making our way back to the hotel. It was the perfect way to unwind and recharge for our next adventure! Even though this was to be considered an easy day our route was still 42-miles with over 2100 feet of elevation gain. From gentle climbs to exhilarating descents (really we struggle up the climbs, due to body mass, and then enjoy the body mass on the way back down), each mile pushes your limits while rewarding you with breathtaking landscapes.

Day 6: Easy Day…Shopping

Our adventure for the day took us to the stunning Port of Polenca, where we kicked things off with our usual beverage choices (Coke for Jeff, cappuccino for me. Why do they taste so much better in Europe?) With energy of sugar and caffeine coursing through our veins, we dove into some delightful shopping (editorial note from Karen—one of Randy’s passions), exploring the charming boutiques that lined the waterfront. Next, we made our way back to the historical town of Alcudia, immersed in the vibrant market scene, where we couldn’t find any treasures. Not ready to call it a day, we continued on to Can Picafort, where we continued shopping. By the time we wrapped up our day, we had covered an unimpressive 30 miles filled with laughter, shopping, and unforgettable moments. The adventure never ends!

Day 7: Sa Calobra

Sa Calobra, often regarded as the hardest climb on the island of Mallorca, offers cyclists, including 2 old dudes, a blend of breathtaking beauty and challenging terrain. The winding road includes steep gradients and sharp hairpin turns that test even the most seasoned riders. The 12-kilometer ascent, gives stunning views of rocky cliffs and the shimmering Mediterranean Sea below, if you can tear your attention away from your handlebars. The anticipation of conquering one of Mallorca’s most iconic routes gave fuel to every grueling pedal stroke, making the reward of reaching the summit becomes even sweeter. Sa Calobra ended up being one of those items, after the fact, that I would put on my bucket list, a must-experience challenge.

Even the Norway cross country ski team takes advantage of Mallorca sun for their training. As I embarked on the challenging ascent of Sa Calobra, I was greeted not just by the breathtaking views but also by the sight of dedicated athletes conquering the climb alongside me. Their spirit is infectious, and the picturesque landscape serves as the perfect backdrop for their rigorous training regimen.

The climb began smoothly, with a gentle incline that felt easy as I was fresh and full of energy. But as the gradient rose steadily to 6%, then to 8%, and ultimately hitting a grueling 12%, I found myself pushing my limits. The thrill peaked during a heart-pounding switchback, where I exchanged startled looks with a bus that seemed way too close for comfort. After conquering the steeper sections, I reached a well-deserved rest area at about 75% completion. There, I savored a cold Coke and a warm cappuccino with my buddy Jeff, reviving my spirits for the final push. Upon reaching the summit, I couldn't resist raising my bike high in triumphant celebration. However, the adventure was far from over. We still had the ride back to the hotel ahead of us, which was not without its own delights, including a fantastic lunch stop. In total, I covered 48 miles and climbed a whopping 4,100 feet, making the achievement even sweeter.

Day 8: Last Day of Riding (and Rain)

After completing the breathtaking rides along Cap de Formentor and Sa Colabra, we decided it was time to take a breather. With a few essential items checked off our list—some t-shirts and a little something for my grandsons—we wandered through the charming streets. Just as we began our search, the sky darkened ominously, prompting us to duck into a nearby shop. Moments later, the rain poured down, but we felt lucky to have chosen the perfect spot. Two t-shirts later, the rain cleared up, and the sun began to peek through the clouds. We treated ourselves to our usual beverages, savoring the moment before heading back to our hotel.

Another encounter with the Norwegian cross country training team, one glimpsed from our lunch stop, the other upon our return, we passed two young ladies training. Still inspiring.

As our Mallorcan cycling adventure comes to a close, we took one last stroll along the Can Picafort beach. We savored a few adult beverages, soaking in the final moments of this adventure. During our leisurely walk, we stumbled upon the perfect trinket for my grandsons. With a mix of nostalgia and satisfaction, we returned our bike rentals, reflecting on an exhilarating week filled with exploration. Together, we covered an impressive 270 miles and climbed a whopping 13,650 feet. It was a journey endured in our legs, and this chapter may be closing, but our adventure is far from over…where will I go for my next cycling adventure?
