(6)- In Search of the Greatest Hike: Review

Why did we go to Norway?

Somewhere, somehow, the images of the two most famous cliffs in Norway, Preikestolen and Trolltunga came into my awareness. Karen blames it on some photography magazine or website. I knew I wanted to experience these views first hand. I have always been one for challenging myself; to attempt the extreme. The fear of failure has never been an issue. Years ago, I made an agreement with Karen that I can try anything, as long as I train for it.

Planning the trip

Using Kimkim for our travel arrangements was a game-changer for our hiking adventure in Norway. Our agent, Linda Veråsdal, expertly coordinated every detail, from hotels to guides, ensuring that we were well-prepared for every trek. When an unexpected electrical storm knocked out train power across the country, Linda was there to help us navigate our way to Stavanger. Once we arrived, she graciously met us in person and even refunded our train fare, showcasing not only her commitment to excellent service but also her dedication to making our experience as smooth as possible. Thanks to Linda, our hiking journey was a resounding success, filled with unforgettable moments.

Next came the training. I knew both hikes, Preikestolen and Trolltunga, would test our physical limits so training became an everyday event. We started out small and built on both distance and elevation change. A big piece of the training was the homework of figuring out what were the distances and amount of climbing involved. Our previous challenges, including the Inca Trail just two years prior, reminded us of the importance of good gear and an adequate fitness level to guarantee a successful adventure, and recovery. There were many times during the hikes that I was amazed with Karen’s ability to keep climbing, moving forward, and showing no fear. I asked her later if she was ever afraid, she said yes but knew the only way to continue was moving forward. Where does this rank in life’s adventures of difficulty? The Inca Trail still ranks as # 1 when you consider length, conditions and altitude. The week in Norway comes in a close # 2. Norway’s hikes were difficult and painful, but my plan worked beautifully, with travel days between each day of hiking to give our bodies a chance to recover. The views were spectacular and must be experienced firsthand. So, it isn’t why Norway, or why push ourselves to our limits, just to take a picture; it is all about living life to the fullest. I am so glad that I have a wife, friend and partner in life that will share these crazy adventures with me, who can look back the next day and laugh about what we’ve just done, wondering if it was one of the dumbest things we’ve ever attempted, and ask me, “What’s next?”

Lodging

Thon Hotel Opera in Oslo offered the perfect blend of convenience and charm, nestled between the stunning opera house and the vibrant heart of downtown Oslo. As we explored the lively streets, it was comforting to return to the hotel, where we could unwind with a view of the city's architectural marvels.

Our journey continued in Stavanger, where the Scandic Stavanger Park Hotel provided not only stylish accommodations but also a prime location, just a short walk from the hotel pickup point for our Preikestolen hike. Each hotel added its unique touch to our adventure, making our journey even more memorable.

In Odda, the Trolltunga Hotel captivated us with its breathtaking views right on the banks of the serene Sandvevatnet Fjord, with sunsets that painted the skies in vibrant hues. Our post hike dinner, in the hotel restaurant, was spectacular. I had some sort of stew (possibly reindeer) and Karen, a local fish.

Finally, in the charming city of Bergen, we indulged in a touch of luxury at the Bergen Børs Hotel, strategically located near the harbor in the historic Bergenhus area, where every corner whispered stories of the past. Each stop along the way enriched our experience, a perfect blend of comfort and unforgettable moments.

Final

Using Kimkim to plan our hiking adventure resulted in an unforgettable experience. Each of our hotels was perfectly located, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the stunning Norwegian landscape. As we traveled across Norway via trains, buses, ferries, vans, and taxis, we found each mode of transport efficient and comfortable. On our travel day to Bergen, we had a delightful time exploring a charming rock museum in Rosendal, which offered a unique glimpse into the area's geological history. However, the real highlight of the day was the breathtaking ferry ride from Rosendal to Bergen, where the views of fjords and mountains left us in awe.

In the end, the search for the greatest hike may be subjective, but there's no denying the incredible journey we had exploring the stunning landscapes of Norway. Over three unforgettable days, we trekked the iconic trails of Trolltunga, Preikestolen (Priest Rock), and a charming day hike in Bergen, each offering its own unique beauty and challenges. And even though Karen was sure I was trying to kill her, she managed to survive each event. While we encountered awe-inspiring fjords and breathtaking views that will stay etched in our memories, it's clear that Trolltunga stands out as a must-do for anyone who needs to add some crazy adventure in addition to viewing the majestic beauty of the landscape in this stunning country. And makes for a very memorable photo.
